ANE Performance for on-device Foundation model
I'm running MacOs 26 Beta 5. I noticed that I can no longer achieve 100% usage on the ANE as I could before with Apple Foundations on-device model. Has Apple activated some kind of throttling or power limiting of the ANE? I cannot get above 3w or 40% usage now since upgrading. I'm on the high power energy mode. I there an API rate limit being applied? I kave a M4 Pro mini with 64 GB of memory.

“Unleashing the MacBook Air M2: 673 TFLOPS Achieved with Highly Optimized Metal Shading Language”
Using highly optimized Metal Shading Language (MSL) code, I pushed the MacBook Air M2 to its performance limits with the deformable_attention_universal kernel. The results demonstrate both the efficiency of the code and the exceptional power of Apple Silicon. The total computational workload exceeded 8.455 quadrillion FLOPs, equivalent to processing 8,455 trillion operations. On average, the code sustained a throughput of 85.37 TFLOPS, showcasing the chip’s remarkable ability to handle massive workloads. Peak instantaneous performance reached approximately 673.73 TFLOPS, reflecting near-optimal utilization of the GPU cores. Despite this intensity, the cumulative GPU runtime remained under 100 seconds, highlighting the code’s efficiency and time optimization. The fastest iteration achieved a record processing time of only 0.051 ms, demonstrating minimal bottlenecks and excellent responsiveness. Memory management was equally impressive: peak GPU memory usage never exceeded 2 MB, reflecting efficient use of the M2’s Unified Memory. This minimizes data transfer overhead and ensures smooth performance across repeated workloads. Overall, these results confirm that a well-optimized Metal implementation can unlock the full potential of Apple Silicon, delivering exceptional computational density, processing speed, and memory efficiency. The MacBook Air M2, often considered an energy-efficient consumer laptop, is capable of handling highly intensive workloads at performance levels typically expected from much larger GPUs. This test validates both the robustness of the Metal code and the extraordinary capabilities of the M2 chip for high-performance computing tasks.

Detection of balls about 6-10ft Away not detecting
I used Yolo5-11 and while performing great detecting balls lets say 5-10ft away in 1920 resolution and even in 640 it really is taking toll on my app performance. When I use Create ML it outputs all in 415x which is probably the reason why it does not detect objects from far. What can I do to preserve some energy ? My model is used with about 1K pictures 200 each test and validate, and from close up and far.

Keras on Mac (M4) is giving inconsistent results compared to running on NVIDIA GPUs
I have seen inconsistent results for my Colab machine learning notebooks running locally on a Mac M4, compared to running the same notebook code on either T4 (in Colab) or a RTX3090 locally. To illustrate the problems I have set up a notebook that implements two simple CNN models that solves the Fashion-MNIST problem. https://colab.research.google.com/drive/11BhtHhN079-BWqv9QvvcSD9U4mlVSocB?usp=sharing For the good model with 2M parameters I get the following results: T4 (Colab, JAX): Test accuracy: 0.925 3090 (Local PC via ssh tunnel, Jax): Test accuracy: 0.925 Mac M4 (Local, JAX): Test accuracy: 0.893 Mac M4 (Local, Tensorflow): Test accuracy: 0.893 That is, I see a significant drop in performance when I run on the Mac M4 compared to the NVIDIA machines, and it seems to be independent of backend. I however do not know how to pinpoint this to either Keras or Apple’s METAL implementation. I have reported this to Keras: https://colab.research.google.com/drive/11BhtHhN079-BWqv9QvvcSD9U4mlVSocB?usp=sharing but as this can be (likely is?) an Apple Metal issue, I wanted to report this here as well. On the mac I am running the following Python libraries: keras 3.9.1 tensorflow 2.19.0 tensorflow-metal 1.2.0 jax 0.5.3 jax-metal 0.1.1 jaxlib 0.5.3

Vision face landmarks shifted on iOS 26 but correct on iOS 18 with same code and image
I'm using Vision framework (DetectFaceLandmarksRequest) with the same code and the same test image to detect face landmarks. On iOS 18 everything works as expected: detected face landmarks align with the face correctly. But when I run the same code on devices with iOS 26, the landmark coordinates are outside the [0,1] range, which indicates they are out of face bounds. Fun fact: the old VNDetectFaceLandmarksRequest API works very well without encountering this issue How I get face landmarks: private let faceRectangleRequest = DetectFaceRectanglesRequest(.revision3) private var faceLandmarksRequest = DetectFaceLandmarksRequest(.revision3) func detectFaces(in ciImage: CIImage) async throws -> FaceTrackingResult { let faces = try await faceRectangleRequest.perform(on: ciImage) faceLandmarksRequest.inputFaceObservations = faces let landmarksResults = try await faceLandmarksRequest.perform(on: ciImage) ... } How I show face landmarks in SwiftUI View: private func convert( point: NormalizedPoint, faceBoundingBox: NormalizedRect, imageSize: CGSize ) -> CGPoint { let point = point.toImageCoordinates( from: faceBoundingBox, imageSize: imageSize, origin: .upperLeft ) return point } At the same time, it works as expected and gives me the correct results: region is FaceObservation.Landmarks2D.Region let points: [CGPoint] = region.pointsInImageCoordinates( imageSize, origin: .upperLeft ) After that, I found that the landmarks are normalized relative to the unalignedBoundingBox. However, I can’t access it in code. Still, using these values for the bounding box works correctly. Things I've already tried: Same image input Tested multiple devices on iOS 26.2 -> always wrong. Tested multiple devices on iOS 18.7.1 -> always correct. Environment: macOS 26.2 Xcode 26.2 (17C52) Real devices, not simulator Face Landmarks iOS 18 Face Landmarks iOS 26

How to test for VisualIntelligence available on device?
I'm adding Visual Intelligence support to my app, and now want to add a Tip using TipKit to guide users to this feature from within my app. I want to add a Rule to my Tip which will only show this Tip on devices where Visual Intelligence is supported (ex. not iPhone 14 Pro Max). What is the best way for me to determine availability to set this TipKit rule? Here's the documentation I'm following for Visual Intelligence: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/visualintelligence/integrating-your-app-with-visual-intelligence

Is there anywhere to get precompiled WhisperKit models for Swift?
If try to dynamically load WhipserKit's models, as in below, the download never occurs. No error or anything. And at the same time I can still get to the huggingface.co hosting site without any headaches, so it's not a blocking issue. let config = WhisperKitConfig( model: "openai_whisper-large-v3", modelRepo: "argmaxinc/whisperkit-coreml" ) So I have to default to the tiny model as seen below. I have tried so many ways, using ChatGPT and others, to build the models on my Mac, but too many failures, because I have never dealt with builds like that before. Are there any hosting sites that have the models (small, medium, large) already built where I can download them and just bundle them into my project? Wasted quite a large amount of time trying to get this done. import Foundation import WhisperKit @MainActor class WhisperLoader: ObservableObject { var pipe: WhisperKit? init() { Task { await self.initializeWhisper() } } private func initializeWhisper() async { do { Logging.shared.logLevel = .debug Logging.shared.loggingCallback = { message in print("[WhisperKit] \(message)") } let pipe = try await WhisperKit() // defaults to "tiny" self.pipe = pipe print("initialized. Model state: \(pipe.modelState)") guard let audioURL = Bundle.main.url(forResource: "44pf", withExtension: "wav") else { fatalError("not in bundle") } let result = try await pipe.transcribe(audioPath: audioURL.path) print("result: \(result)") } catch { print("Error: \(error)") } } }

Do App Intent Domains work with Siri already?
Hi, guys. I'm writing about Apple Intelligence and I reached the point I have to explain App Intent Domains https://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppIntents/app-intent-domains but I noticed that there is a note explaining that these services are not available with Siri. I tried the example provided by Apple at https://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppIntents/making-your-app-s-functionality-available-to-siri and I can only make the intents work from the Shortcuts App, but not from Siri. Is this correct. App Intent Domains are still not available with Siri? Thanks

Provide actionable feedback for the Foundation Models framework and the on-device LLM
We are really excited to have introduced the Foundation Models framework in WWDC25. When using the framework, you might have feedback about how it can better fit your use cases. Starting in macOS/iOS 26 Beta 4, the best way to provide feedback is to use #Playground in Xcode. To do so: In Xcode, create a playground using #Playground. Fore more information, see Running code snippets using the playground macro. Reproduce the issue by setting up a session and generating a response with your prompt. In the canvas on the right, click the thumbs-up icon to the right of the response. Follow the instructions on the pop-up window and submit your feedback by clicking Share with Apple. Another way to provide your feedback is to file a feedback report with relevant details. Specific to the Foundation Models framework, it’s super important to add the following information in your report: Language model feedback This feedback contains the session transcript, including the instructions, the prompts, the responses, etc. Without that, we can’t reason the model’s behavior, and hence can hardly take any action. Use logFeedbackAttachment(sentiment:issues:desiredOutput: ) to retrieve the feedback data of your current model session, as shown in the usage example, write the data into a file, and then attach the file to your feedback report. If you believe what you’d report is related to the system configuration, please capture a sysdiagnose and attach it to your feedback report as well. The framework is still new. Your actionable feedback helps us evolve the framework quickly, and we appreciate that. Thanks, The Foundation Models framework team

CoreML model can load on MacOS 15.3.1 but failed to load on MacOS 15.5
I have been working on a small CV program, which uses fine-tuned U2Netp model converted by coremltools 8.3.0 from PyTorch. It works well on my iPhone (with iOS version 18.5) and my Macbook (with MacOS version 15.3.1). But it fails to load after I upgraded Macbook to MacOS version 15.5. I have attached console log when loading this model. AppShortcuts.xcstrings does not translate each invocation phrase option separately, just the first
Due to our min iOS version, this is my first time using .xcstrings instead of .strings for AppShortcuts. When using the migrate .strings to .xcstrings Xcode context menu option, an .xcstrings catalog is produced that, as expected, has each invocation phrase as a separate string key. However, after compilation, the catalog changes to group all invocation phrases under the first phrase listed for each intent (see attached screenshot). It is possible to hover in blank space on the right and add more translations, but there is no 1:1 key matching requirement to the phrases on the left nor a requirement that there are the same number of keys in one language vs. another. (The lines just happen to align due to my window size.) What does that mean, practically? Do all sub-phrases in each language in AppShortcuts.xcstrings get processed during compilation, even if there isn't an equivalent phrase key declared in the AppShortcut (e.g., the ja translation has more phrases than the English)? (That makes some logical sense, as these phrases need not be 1:1 across languages.) In the AppShortcut declaration, if I delete all but the top invocation phrase, does nothing change with Siri? Is there something I'm doing incorrectly? struct WatchShortcuts: AppShortcutsProvider { static var appShortcuts: [AppShortcut] { AppShortcut( intent: QuickAddWaterIntent(), phrases: [ "\(.applicationName) log water", "\(.applicationName) log my water", "Log water in \(.applicationName)", "Log my water in \(.applicationName)", "Log a bottle of water in \(.applicationName)", ], shortTitle: "Log Water", systemImageName: "drop.fill" ) } }

MLX/Ollama Benchmarking Suite - Open Source and Free
Hi all, I spent the last few months developing an MLX/Ollama local AI Benchmarking suite for Apple Silicon, written in pure Swift and signed with an Apple Developer Certificate, open source, GPL, and free. I would love some feedback to continue development. It is the only benchmarking suite I know of that supports live power metrics and MLX natively, as well as quick exports for benchmark results, and an arena mode, Model A vs B with history. I really want this project to succeed, and have widespread use, so getting 75 stars on the github repo makes it eligible for Homebrew/Cask distribution. Github Repo

Is it possible to pass the streaming output of Foundation Models down a function chain
I am writing a custom package wrapping Foundation Models which provides a chain-of-thought with intermittent self-evaluation among other things. At first I was designing this package with the command line in mind, but after seeing how well it augments the models and makes them more intelligent I wanted to try and build a SwiftUI wrapper around the package. When I started I was using synchronous generation rather than streaming, but to give the best user experience (as I've seen in the WWDC sessions) it is necessary to provide constant feedback to the user that something is happening. I have created a super simplified example of my setup so it's easier to understand. First, there is the Reasoning conversation item, which can be converted to an XML representation which is then fed back into the model (I've found XML works best for structured input) public typealias ConversationContext = XMLDocument extension ConversationContext { public func toPlainText() -> String { return xmlString(options: [.nodePrettyPrint]) } } /// Represents a reasoning item in a conversation, which includes a title and reasoning content. /// Reasoning items are used to provide detailed explanations or justifications for certain decisions or responses within a conversation. @Generable(description: "A reasoning item in a conversation, containing content and a title.") struct ConversationReasoningItem: ConversationItem { @Guide(description: "The content of the reasoning item, which is your thinking process or explanation") public var reasoningContent: String @Guide(description: "A short summary of the reasoning content, digestible in an interface.") public var title: String @Guide(description: "Indicates whether reasoning is complete") public var done: Bool } extension ConversationReasoningItem: ConversationContextProvider { public func toContext() -> ConversationContext { // <ReasoningItem title="${title}"> // ${reasoningContent} // </ReasoningItem> let root = XMLElement(name: "ReasoningItem") root.addAttribute(XMLNode.attribute(withName: "title", stringValue: title) as! XMLNode) root.stringValue = reasoningContent return ConversationContext(rootElement: root) } } Then there is the generator, which creates a reasoning item from a user query and previously generated items: struct ReasoningItemGenerator { var instructions: String { """ <omitted for brevity> """ } func generate(from input: (String, [ConversationReasoningItem])) async throws -> sending LanguageModelSession.ResponseStream<ConversationReasoningItem> { let session = LanguageModelSession(instructions: instructions) // build the context for the reasoning item out of the user's query and the previous reasoning items let userQuery = "User's query: \(input.0)" let reasoningItemsText = input.1.map { $0.toContext().toPlainText() }.joined(separator: "\n") let context = userQuery + "\n" + reasoningItemsText let reasoningItemResponse = try await session.streamResponse( to: context, generating: ConversationReasoningItem.self) return reasoningItemResponse } } I'm not sure if returning LanguageModelSession.ResponseStream<ConversationReasoningItem> is the right move, I am just trying to imitate what session.streamResponse returns. Then there is the orchestrator, which I can't figure out. It receives the streamed ConversationReasoningItems from the Generator and is responsible for streaming those to SwiftUI later and also for evaluating each reasoning item after it is complete to see if it needs to be regenerated (to keep the model on-track). I want the users of the orchestrator to receive partially generated reasoning items as they are being generated by the generator. Later, when they finish, if the evaluation passes, the item is kept, but if it fails, the reasoning item should be removed from the stream before a new one is generated. So in-flight reasoning items should be outputted aggresively. I really am having trouble figuring this out so if someone with more knowledge about asynchronous stuff in Swift, or- even better- someone who has worked on the Foundation Models framework could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!

CreateML Training Object Detection Not using MPS
Hi everyone Im currently developing an object detection model that shall identify up to seven classes in an image. While im usually doing development with basic python and the ultralytics library, i thought i would like to give CreateML a shot. The experience is actually very nice, except for the fact that the model seem not to be using any ANE or GPU (MPS) for accelerated training. On https://developer.apple.com/machine-learning/create-ml/ it states: "On-device training Train models blazingly fast right on your Mac while taking advantage of CPU and GPU." Am I doing something wrong? Im running the training on Apple M1 Pro 16GB MacOS 26.1 (Tahoe) Xcode 26.1 (Build version 17B55) It would be super nice to get some feedback or instructions. Thank you in advance!
