Silent Push notifications XCode 16.3 stop working on production
Hello, we have recently started signing and building our applications using Xcode 16.3. Since we made this change, we’ve noticed that the applications have stopped receiving silent push notifications (content-available: 1) when they are distributed via TestFlight or the App Store, even though we haven’t changed anything in the way these notifications are sent. As I mentioned, this started happening after migrating our project from Xcode 15 to Xcode 16.3. Regular push notifications are still working as expected, but silent ones are not being received by the apps. We are desperate because we rely on these silent notifications to inform the apps of updates, and we haven’t been able to identify the root cause of the issue.

Questions about VoIP Push compliance rules and CallKit handling
Hello everyone, I’m an iOS developer working on a real-time communication app that supports VoIP calls using CallKit. The app has been in production for more than 5 years. Over the years, some users have occasionally reported that they do not receive incoming call pushes. We have tried multiple optimizations on both the client and server side, but the improvement has been limited. From Apple documentation and discussions online, I understand that iOS may restrict VoIP pushes if the system detects violations of VoIP push usage rules (for example, not presenting a CallKit call after receiving a VoIP push). However, the exact rules and thresholds for these violations are not clearly documented, so I’d like to ask a few questions to better understand the expected behavior. Below is a simplified description of our current call flow. Call Flow Caller When the user initiates a call: We do not use CallKit The call is handled entirely using a custom in-app call UI Callee When the user receives a call: Device locked or app in background A VoIP push wakes the app The app presents the CallKit incoming call UI App in foreground The server still sends a VoIP push The app first reports the call to CallKit After a very short delay, the app programmatically ends the CallKit call Then a custom in-app call UI is presented via the app's long connection The reason we always send a VoIP push (even when the app is in the foreground) is that we want to maximize call delivery reliability.

Notifications scheduled but never delivered at scheduled time

Notification Service Extension is killed during startup
We are observing an issue where the iOS Notification Service Extension (NSE) is terminated by the system during startup, before either didReceive(_:withContentHandler:) or serviceExtensionTimeWillExpire(_:) is invoked. When this occurs, the notification is delivered without modification (for example, an encrypted payload is shown to the user). System logs frequently contain the message “Extension will be killed because it used its runtime in starting up”. During testing, we observed that CPU-intensive operations or heavy initialization performed early in the extension lifecycle — especially inside init() or directly on the main thread in didReceive often cause the system to kill the NSE almost immediately. These terminations happen significantly earlier than the commonly observed ~30-second execution window where the OS normally invokes serviceExtensionTimeWillExpire(_:) before ending the extension. When these early terminations occur, there is no call to the expiry handler, and the process appears to be forcefully shut down. Moving the same operations to a background thread changes the behavior: the extension eventually expires around the usual 30-second window, after which the OS calls serviceExtensionTimeWillExpire(_:). We also observed that memory usage plays a role in early termination. During tests involving large memory allocations, the system consistently killed the extension once memory consumption exceeded a certain threshold (in our measurements, this occurred around 150–180 MB). Again, unlike normal time-based expiration, the system did not call the expiry handler and no crash report was produced. Since Apple’s documentation does not specify concrete CPU, memory, or startup-cost constraints for Notification Service Extensions or any other extensions beyond the general execution limit, we are seeking clarification and best-practice guidance on expected behaviors, particularly around initialization cost and the differences between startup termination. Question about "Notification (NSE) filtering" capability request
We are developing a messaging app which sends End-to-End encrypted data. The application supports multiple types of E2EE data, including text messages and voice over IP calls. Apple's article titled “Sending End-to-End Encrypted VoIP calls” (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/callkit/sending-end-to-end-encrypted-voip-calls) states that the following steps are required to support E2EE VoIP calls: Request permission to receive remote notifications through the User Notifications framework Register for VoIP calls using PuskKit Add a Notification Service Extension target to your app. Add the com.apple.developer.usernotifications.filtering entitlement to the NSE target’s entitlements file. We have completed steps one through three. We are still missing the filtering entitlement. As of right now the system does not allow us to use reportNewIncomingVoIPPushPayload(_:completion:) method because of the missing entitlement.
 Below is a short description of how our messaging app works: User sends a message to another user. The message is encrypted on device and sent to our server. The server receives the message and sends a notification request to APNs if needed. The server cannot decrypt the message. As an additional security feature we do not pass the encrypted message in the notification payload. The notification payload only contains a localizable generic placeholder message string and default sound in the ‘aps’ dictionary part. Upon receiving a notification from our server, the NSE makes a request to our server and fetches the latest messages (encryption keys have already been exchanged between the participants of the conversation) and determines what to do next (display a banner, or pass a call to CallKit). E2EE VoIP calls are a core feature of our app, so it is imperative that we receive the filtering entitlement. Our capability request has been rejected twice now. The latest request was rejected because: Support for VoIP calls should be provided by PushKit. For more information, please consult the documentation page "Responding to Notifications from PushKit". We cannot support VoIP calls by solely relying on PushKit. Our server cannot make a distinction when to use ‘voip’ (call) and ‘alert’ (text message) apns-push-types. Therefore, the application must be able to use reportNewIncomingVoIPPushPayload(_:completion:) function, where com.apple.developer.usernotifications.filtering entitlement is needed. We have sent the above text to support two weeks ago and made yet another request. Has anyone been able to get the capability as of late? What are the magic words that need to be included in the capability request? Can someone here help us? We made the first request on 3rd of September so this process has taken two months. Our planned release date is coming up and the absence of the capability is holding us back. We already have a released desktop and Android versions so changing the server implementation is really not an option.

Server notifications v2 UNSUCCESSFUL_HTTP_RESPONSE_CODE
Hello. I'm currently implementing Apple Notification v2 to prepare for refunds for in-app purchases, but I'm not receiving requests from Apple servers to my backend server. I've applied HTTPS (TLS 1.2) and correctly registered production/sandbox notification URLs on App Store Connect. After requesting a test notification, when I check the status of testNotificationToken, I receive an UNSUCCESSFUL_HTTP_RESPONSE_CODE as follows: {"signedPayload":"......":[{"atteptDate":1752128001970,"sendAttemptResult":"UNSUCCESSFUL_HTTP_RESPONSE_CODE"}]} The endpoint for receiving notifications is set to accept POST requests with application/json format, and it responds with 200 (OK) without any content. However, Apple notifications are not coming through. Could anyone help me with this issue?

Cannot receive APNs notification
Hi all, We encountered an issue where APNs (Apple Push Notification service) push messages cannot be received during development. The specific description is as follows: Our app runs on an iPad that connects to the cellular network using a SIM card and accesses the Internet through the company's MDM, which provides APN setting proxies. During operation, we found that the device fails to receive push messages from APNs. Network packet capture revealed that the connection attempt by apsd to port 5223 failed. According to Apple's documentation (https://support.apple.com/zh-cn/102266), when port 5223 cannot be connected to, it will fall back to port 443 and use a proxy. However, our packet capture showed that when port 5223 was unreachable, the apsd service on the iPad did not attempt to establish a connection to port 443. Since the iPad device currently cannot establish a connection with APNs, it consistently fails to receive push messages from APNs. We tried disconnecting the SIM card and using a Wi-Fi environment, and in this case, the iPad device was able to receive push messages from APNs normally. Could you advise us on how to proceed with troubleshooting in this situation?

Xcode16.1&iOS18.1.1 Debugging App, unable to respond “didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken” delegation
I am an iOS development engineer. Recently, I updated the Xcode version to 16.1 (16B40) and updated my debugging device (iPhone 15) to iOS 18.1.1. However, I found that I could not respond to the delegate method. I confirmed that my code, certificate, Xcode settings, and network environment had not changed. Simply executing application.registerForRemoteNotifications() in func application(_ application: UIApplication, didFinishLaunchingWithOptions launchOptions: [UIApplication.LaunchOptionsKey: Any]?) -> Bool did not receive a response(didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken or didFailToRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithError ). In the same environment, when I switched to another device for debugging (iOS 17.0.3), the delegate method would respond. I really don't know what to do, I hope someone can help me, I would be very grateful. Please note: Everything is normal when using devices before iOS 18.1.1 version

push notifications are not receiving to device
iOS push notification is not working for in App since 03-Apr-2025. We are pushing the message to APNS from our application, but message is not delivered to iOS device. We have performed tests on both PROD and QA environment and following are the observations: PROD successfully pushing the notification to APNS but not receiving the notification on iOS device (100% failure). QA received notification on iOS device always (100% success). Analyzed PROD notification server log at our end and we do not observe any error and it is showing successful also when message is pushed to APNS all the time. Need to check from APNS why push messages are not delivered to iOS devices. Validated the PROD APNS certificate at our end which we are using during call to APNS - it is valid till Oct 2025. Please suggest me any possible solution because I don't have any clue where it is failing and what to do

Clarification about ANCS being unavailable
Hello, I am working on a project that involves using external device to connect over BLE with users iPhone. I would like to be able to notify users on our device about eg. incoming calls, messages etc. I have been succesfull in using ANCS to achieve that but I am a little worried around consistency of this solution, especially taking into account following line from documentation: Due to the nature of iOS, the ANCS is not guaranteed to always be present. As a result, the NC should look for and subscribe to the Service Changed characteristic of the GATT service in order to monitor for the potential publishing and unpublishing of the ANCS at any time. I have not been able (yet?) to find or identify circumstances when ANCS would not be avilable or would be "removed in runtime", hence would it be possible to request some guidance and clarification on the conditions when ANCS can be unavailable or removed? Thank you!

Push Notifications
The following issue has occurred: Push notifications are not being received on certain devices. What could be the possible causes? Push notifications are being sent from our own server, and we are receiving normal responses from APNs. Users have confirmed that notifications are enabled on their devices, and they report no network issues. This problem is occurring for multiple users.

[iOS 26 beta] Unexpected Behavior: didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken Invoked Before User Notification Authorization on iOS 26 Beta
I'm encountering an issue with our legacy Objective-C codebase that uses UIApplicationDelegate. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue: Uninstall the application from the device. Install and launch the application. As part of the launch event, the client requests notification permission. The permission prompt is still displayed, even though the client receives a remote notification token (which appears to be a cached one). I followed the same steps with a sample app built with Swift (SwiftUI), and this issue did not occur. In the Swift app, I consistently received a delegate<didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken> call after the user allowed the notification permission. Could you please provide some insights into why this might be happening with only our client?

Critical Notifications
Hey Together, I have seen that critical notifications need to be confirmed by apple to be used. Sadly I couldn't figure out where to ask for that. Context: I have a sports tournament app for Beach Handball. There are a couple of Courts like up to 20-25. The main use for that in my app would be to notify first aiders/Medics. Right now they are called in via Speakers or by the referees just writing that into a WhatsApp chat. As this takes a long time and the speakers can be deactivated due to rain, power shortage or even the medics sometimes are not in range to exactly hear the speakers calling them. To Speed up this process I want them to download the App, Register via an E-Mail or a One Time Code. Now if a referee needs immediate Help from the Medics on their court they can send the Critical alert to the Medics without having to write a chat into a WhatsApp group, to get a call through the speakers 10 minutes later which the medics may not even hear. A couple of weeks ago we had a player falling on her back/neck/head and they couldn't figure out if she broke her neck or not. Luckily the medics were right next to the court and saw that. but what would happen if they were a couple hundred of meters away and did not notice that? I mean the PA system was off due to a power shortage. someone trying to move her? Risking her death? And while we are at it we could add those notifications if a team is missing to a court for a game that already should've started. Critical because it is urgent. Those notifications are handled with care.

APNs Returning 200 OK for Uninstalled Apps Instead of 410 Error
We're experiencing an issue with Apple Push Notification service where APNs continues to return 200 OK responses for device tokens belonging to uninstalled applications. Issue Details: When sending push notifications to device tokens. APNs returns 200 OK responses even for devices where our app was uninstalled more than a month ago According to documentation(https://developer.apple.com/documentation/usernotifications/handling-notification-responses-from-apns), APNs should return 410 status code with JSON body for invalid tokens Expected Behavior: APNs should return 410 status code when device token is no longer valid (app uninstalled) Thanks in advanced for support

Background timer
Hey everyone! I'm trying to develop an app that would need to send periodic notifications (every 20 minutes, for instance) to the user even when the app is not running (but only when the phone is being used). I've been reading through the prior comments and all about not being able to have a timer run in the background in the way I need it to, but I wanted to ask if there's any way around this, or is there truly no way? If there is no way to do this, I was just now considering another workaround, where I could try getting the time they open their phone, and from there, I schedule local notification for every 20 minutes or so for the entire day, and they keep sending until the phone is turned off, when the rest of the scheduled local notifications are cancelled. Is this possible? I would also appreciate any other suggests/workarounds for this. Happy to provide any additional details needed! Thanks!

iOS App not able to get VoIP push notification when device is powered on, After opening App VoIP push receiving
When User restarted iOS device, after powering on iOS App is not able to get VoIP push notification. If user opens App, immediate VoIP push receiving. In Normal (App Kill or Background state) everything works as expected. Issue is when device is powered on and immediately( In 1-2 mins) try to call on device. UNNotificationServiceExtension Not Displaying Sender Image
I created a Notification Service Extension to display profile images in place for the app image (i.e. iMessage). I send a remote push notification via Firebase Functions, and in the payload, the relevant profile image url string. The profile image url string in the payload is successfully delivered as it appears in my console log and AppDelegate didReceiveRemoteNotification function. My problem is the profile image does not replace the default app icon image in the remote push notification. Below is my configuration. Any guidance would be appreciated! Push notifications - Traffic gets "server-rst"
It seems our company server is sending to Apple push service the push notifications that are supposed to be transferred to devices our app is installed on – but you it seems you are blocking the request We can see traffic going out from our server side towards the apple gateway notification server using port 2195 and we can see that the traffic gets "server-rst" meaning that the apple gateway server kills the connection You might need to whitelist our external IP's
